Perceptual Chunks and Linguistic Mediation of Visual Attention

1235

Abstract

The author reviews modern studies in cognitive psychology on visual attention as a higher mental function and focuses, in particular, on the problem of mediation of perceptual attention. One of the forms of such mediation is the use of visual context and word structure representations as a means of increasing the efficiency of letter stimulus identification in attentionally demanding perceptual tasks. Drawing on various experimental evidence, including her own research, the author provides comparative analysis of the inner and outer mediation forms in attention tasks on letter stimulus identification when such stimulus is presented within a word as holistic language unit, which could be presented either letter by letter or simultaneously. The author also discusses a hypothesis on the perceptual chunking as a possible mediation mechanism and describes two types of perceptual units that vary in their formation mechanisms.
