The Organization of Eye Movements in the Perception of Facial Images

Abstract

This study present methodologies and results of research on subjects’ ocular motor activity when recognizing a facial image. An analysis of dominating functional facial structures is performed, including the paths of visual surveying, during the identification of a model’s ethnicity and his emotional state. The received data leads to conclude that the dominance of perception of the sides of a face is a systematic effect, following personal principles based on geniture, dynamics and development. During the completion of perception tasks, the primary allocation of eye movement in one or another side of a face is not connected with the effectiveness of their completion. The most important determinant of the organization of ocular motor activity in recognizing facial expressions is facial feature structure. Most often the left eye and the lower-right part of the model’s face are fixated upon. In various combinations the zones of interest are combined by saccadic movements into one whole, transforming into focal points of visual surveying. The effective solution of perception tasks presumes a combination of overall (ambient) and scanning (focal) methods of perceiving and organizing eye movements.
