Abstract

The article presents study results of influence of sociocultural factor on the formation of the relationship to the body and eating disorders in adolescent girls and young women (school and university students of non-clinical population of Moscow aged 12 to 23 years). The risk of eating disorders was assessed using EAT-26 (Eating Attitude Test); body satisfaction was assessed using BAS scale (Body Appreciation Scale). Social and cultural attitudes to the role of physical appearance in success were tested using SCAA scale (Social and cultural attitudes about appearance). We revealed significant positive correlations of four factors of SCAA questionnaire with total score on EAT-26 and its individual subscales (diet fads, bulimia, oral control), as well as negative correlations with the BAS scale. Thus, the pronounced effect of socio-cultural factor, based on fixation of girls representations of the relationship between physical attractiveness and success in life (happiness, social acceptance, success) is associated with body dissatisfaction and risk of eating disorders.
