Abstract

This review summarizes data from studies of Swiss psychologists and sociologists about parenting styles in a family, and child nurturing strategies. We discuss the problems associated with manifestations of parental authority in the family, its influence on the self-esteem of the child and school performance. We briefly characterize authors’ classifications of parenting styles identified in the research. We report the data on the influence of socio-cultural and economic status of parents on their educational practices. We briefly overview the types of spousal interaction, identified on the basis of the family openness and autonomy degree indicators in relation to the environment, the distribution of roles in the family. We consider the relationship between the type of family functioning and social status of the spouses, which influences the formation of educational practices of parents and accordingly the style and strategy of raising a child.
