L.S. Vygotsky: Overcoming Evolutionism in Exploring Development 838

Abstract
The paper discusses evolutionism, i.e. the concept of development as a linear and gradual process, and how L.S. Vygotsky overcame its limitations. It reviews the problem of defining evolutionism and the first historical attempt to overcome evolutionism in anthropology connected with the emergence and development of functionalism in this discipline. The author argues that L.S. Vygotsky was the first to overcome evolutionism in psychology. This becomes particularly evident in his work on egocentric speech: it embodies a holistic system of interrelated principles, the most fundamental of which is the principle of functional analysis. The author concludes that this system of principles can be regarded as a means of overcoming evolutionism in the context of cultural-historical psychology and can be applied to the study of developmental phenomena other than egocentric speech.
