Article describes functions of the character toy in the play and its role in the life of a preschool child. Attention is drawn to the fact that character toy is a tool of self-expression and adoption of social experience. A toy is considered to be a tool of going beyond the apparent situation and as a communication partner that allows to realize own feelings. In such sense character toy becomes a psychological tool. Qualities of the toy that allow it to perform the function of a psychological tool are analyzed. Main criteria of character toys' psychological expertise are verified.
