Abstract
The article presents validation of the coping strategies questionnaire (COPE, Carver C. S., Scheier M. F., Weintraub J. K.) on a mixed sample of 523 subjects. Development of a new instrument is due to the increased interest in the role of coping with stress behavior in general, clinical, forensic and other areas of psychology, pedagogy and medicine. Fourteen-factor structure of the Russian version was established, which is close to the original. High reliability indices were demonstrated (consistency of items with the scales and the stability of these scales in retesting), construct validity of the questionnaire was established. Gender differences in coping strategies were shown. The questionnaire consists of 60 questions and 14 scales. Using the COPE scales it is possible to detect a wide range of productive and nonproductive coping strategies, including several types of avoidant coping, tendency of “substance abuse”, tendency to turn to religion in stressful situations, as well as the tendency to rely on two types of social support – instrumental and emotional.

Keywords: coping strategies, coping behavior, the COPE questionnaire, validity, reliability
