The Effect of Interest in School Subjects on the Professional Plans of Senior High School Students

The purpose of the study presented in the article was to investigate the interrelation between being fascinated about school subjects and students’ professional plans. We hypothesized that there is an association between planning the professional perspectives and interests in school subjects, and that fascination about school subjects related to the relevant professional plans has a positive effect on academic performance. The study involved 235 people - students of 9th, 11th grades of secondary schools in Moscow. The following methods were used: diagnostics, analysis of school documentation, professiograms’ analysis, statistical data analyses (SPSS 14.0). The school records were studied to identify the school performance. The assumption that there is a relationship between planning of professional perspectives and interests in school subjects was partly confirmed. Significant relationship was found in the following subjects: mathematics, biology, physics, chemistry, history, social studies, physical education, world culture. The assumption that interest in subjects related to the professional plans have a positive effect on academic achievement was fully confirmed.
