L.S. Vygotsky and Scientific Schools of Moscow State University: Unity in Diversity

Abstract

The historical-methodological paper reviews the developmental origins of the Moscow State University's schools of psychology that were related to G.I. Chelpanov's activities. It reviews the schools of thought developed by L.S. Vygotsky, S.L. Rubinstein, A.N. Leontiev, A.R. Luria, P.Ya. Galperin, B.V. Zeigarnik, and Ye.N. Sokolov. The artcile reveals not only the differences between these schools (i.e. the differences in main concepts and topics), but also common ground in their basic positions that trace back to the ideas of L.S. Vygotsky's cultural-historical psychology. The University's schools of thought are represented as a 'tree': L.S. Vygotsky's theory is compared to its roots, S.L. Rubinstein's, A.N. Leontiev's and P.Ya. Galperin's treories - to its trunk, and A.R. Luria's neuropsychological theory and Ye.N. Sokolov's psychophysiological theory - to its branches. This representation refers to the author's conclusion that all these schools should be regarded as a joint school of psychology of the Moscow State University.
