The article is devoted to the discussion of psychological and social factors which influence the forming and sustaining of physical perfectionism and body dissatisfaction. Main national studies of physical perfectionism as a separate phenomenon and one of significant factors of emotional ill-being of adolescents and young people are analyzed. The article acknowledges deficit of such studies and gives a review of foreign works devoted to research of body dissatisfaction regarding it as a manifestation of physical perfectionism. It presents the results of foreign studies which show contribution of sociocultural, family and personal factors to origination of body dissatisfaction. It also examines harmful consequences of this phenomenon: eating disorders, involvement in various activities associated with physical health risks, affective disorders and suicidal readiness.
