Social Psychological Factors of Professional Health Regulation in Pilots 1990

Zelenova M.E.
PhD in Psychology, Research Fellow, Institute of Psychology of the Russian Academy of Science, Moscow, Russia

The paper presents results of psychological evaluation of pilots. It reviews the con- nections between health, sociodemographic characteristics and personality traits of the subjects. As it was revealed, signs of mental strain, fatigue and stress strongly cor- relate with the characteristics referring to the social interaction process and behavior regulation in the individual, such as 'sociability', 'emotional lability', 'openness', 'shy- ness', 'balance', 'neuroticism', and 'hardiness'. The study showed that the pilots' satis- faction with the professional activity and its outcomes plays an important role in maintaining their work efficiency and psychological well-being. The results of the study proved that those pilots who had families were more successful in coping with negative stress factors in their workplace as well as in everyday life.

Keywords: professional health, mental resources, negative mental states, stress, fatigue, sociodemographic characteristics, personality traits
