В последнее десятилетие термин “глубинная психотерапия” утратил свою былую значимость. Это видно по отсутствию его в указателях к современным книгам по психоаналитической терапии (Tomä & Kächele, 1987/1992; Heigl-Evers et al., 1993). В психотерапевтических кругах, а особенно в эмпирических областях, получили большое распространение термины “психодинамическая”, так же как и “психоаналитическая психотерапия”.

Три учебника 1984 года издания (Luborsky, 1984; Strupp & Binder, 1984; Klerman et al., 1984) в разных аспектах, но в равной степени были близки интерперсональному и динамическому способам мышления. Они продемонстрировали, что противопоставлять эмпирически проверенные процедуры психодинамическим процедурам не современно.
