The «Discursive turn» in the psychological studies of consciousness

Abstract

The paper presents an analysis of the “discursive turn” in Psychology. The different varieties of discourse analysis that have been applied successfully in psychological studies are reviewed, such as “grammar analysis” of psychological concepts within the framework of L. Wittgenstein’s ideas, critical discourse analysis, the discourse analysis of J. Potter and M. Weatherall, and positional analysis. Discourse analysis is revealed as more than a method, but an original epistemological perspective, which is significantly different in its basic assumptions from the more traditional ways of interpretation in Psychology. Despite its extreme radicalisation of the constitutive function of language, discourse analysis offers a new perspective on a number of psychological issues, for instance, a qualitative approach to the cultural and symbolic resources of consciousness.
