Emotions and adjectives of the Russian language. 2. Adjectives characterizing tactile perception

Abstract

Ontogenetic behavior based predominantly on the usage of tactile sense is used for achievement of adaptive results earlier than behavior based predominantly on the usage of vision or hearing (Gottlieb, 1971; Lickliter, Bahrick, 2000). On the basis of these data it was suggested that behavior related to tactile sense is less differentiated than behavior related to vision or hearing. However it has been found that sentences describing perception of tactile sensations were rated as arousing the least intense emotions as compared to sentences describing perceptions of visual, auditory, gustatory or olfactory sensations (Wilcoxon signed ranks test, р<.0001). In line with an assumption of the united concept of consciousness and emotions (Alexandrov, 1995; 1999; Alexandrov, Sams, 2005), a weak relation between behavior and emotions indicates a comparatively high differentiation of such behavior. It has been suggested that adjectives describing tactile sensations are heterogeneous: the majority of such adjectives are related to highly differentiated manual movements but not to low differentiated tactile body sensations. Results of this study support the above proposition and are discussed in conjunction with results presented in the previous article (Experimental psychology, 2011, Volume 4, №1, pp. 18-28) concerning adjectives describing other types of senses.
