Abstract

Context and relevance. Cognitive impairment is a common complication of a stroke and leads to dysadaptation and loss of self-care skills. Due to organic brain syndrome and emotional disorders, not all patients are able to adequately assess their own health. Therefore, diagnostics of cognitive impairment is necessary for timely correction of disorders and improvement of the quality of life of post-stroke patients. Objective: to consider the specifics of post-stroke cognitive functioning in people who feel the presence of disorders of different intensity. Hypothesis. The objective condition of the cognitive sphere after a stroke partially correlates with the patients’ perception about their disorders. Methods and materials. Study attended by respondent aged 16 to 84 years who had suffered a stroke. Methods: McNair and Kahn Scale, Pictogram Method, Schulte Table Test, Benton Visual Retention Test (BVRT), Masselon Test, Gordon’s questionnaire, Wartegg Test (“Circles”), Frontal Assessment Battery (FAB), Addenbrooke’s Cognitive Examination Revised (ACE-R), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Results. The results of the study demonstrate that people with more pronounced subjective cognitive impairments have more pronounced objective cognitive impairment and depressive disorders. People without objective cognitive deficits tend to exaggerate the symptoms of cognitive impairment. People with moderate objective cognitive deficits tend to downplay their impairments. Conclusions. Patients’ perception of their cognitive abilities doesn’t always correlate with objective condition. Diagnosis of cognitive impairment is important for identifying and correcting potentially reversible disorders.
