Particularities of gender-role identity of persons with non-traditional sexual orientation

1958

Abstract

At the present time, despite decriminalization and depathologization of homosexuality, persons with non-traditional sexual orientation remain in the risk group for psychic and psychological ill-being. However, there are virtually no studies devoted to research of homosexuality within the framework of modern social situation. The principal aim of the contribution is to identify the peculiarities of gender-role identity of persons with non-traditional sexual orientation. It is shown that homosexuals encounter difficulties in identifying the characteristic features of gender (their evaluations have a subjective and ambivalent nature). Homosexuals evaluate the female sex as dominating, having to a great extent masculine qualities; the image of a man is included into a system of negative conceptual connections. The achieved results show that homosexuals differ from heterosexuals in a number of characteristics of conceptual perception of gender.
