The influence of personal temperament traits to withholding information in a survey with the use of polygraph

We present the results of a research attempt to empirically determine the nature of the influence of personal temperament traits (extra- and introversion), on subject’s success in hiding information during surveys using the polygraph, and to expand the capacities to identify the hidden information in different situations of communication and interaction. In the theoretical part of the paper, we reveal the concept of “lie”, as well as psychological and psychophysiological phenomenology of lies; we substantiates the assumption of the impact of some temperament traits on the subject’s efficiency in concealment of information in situations of insincere communication. In the empirical part of the article, we describe the overall strategy, all the circumstances of the study with simulating a situation of a survey with the use of polygraph test, and the results obtained. The presented analysis of empirical indicators of the reliability of the subjects’ responses in the survey using the polygraph shows differences in the effectiveness of hiding information between extroverts and introverts that could very well be the basis for further theoretical interpretations and empirical research.
