Bibliometric Perspective on Cultural-Historical Psychology: Twenty Years of Scholarly Dialogue

Within the framework of the IX International ISCAR Summer University “Practices Based on Cultural-Historical Psychology and Activity Theory”, held on 11–16 August 2025 in Moscow at the Moscow State University of Psychology and Education, the results of a large-scale bibliometric study covering the period 2005–2024 were presented.

On 11 August, the first strand of analysis was introduced — “Cultural-Historical Psychology in BRICS+ Countries: A Bibliometric Analysis” (A.A. Shvedovskaya, MSUPE). The presentation focused on the dynamics of scholarly productivity, the geographical distribution of publications, the structure of international collaboration, and thematic clusters in cultural-historical psychology. The study demonstrated that publication activity in the BRICS+ countries has been steadily increasing, particularly in Brazil, Russia and China, and that the global map of research is gradually shifting towards these countries. Key findings include: the average annual growth rate of publications in BRICS+ is twice as high as in the rest of the world. In recent years, research topics have been increasingly oriented towards education, developmental psychology and social inclusion, while interest in the theoretical and methodological foundations of the approach remains strong. In Brazil, Russia and South Africa, the share of publications classified under “Education” exceeds 42%, highlighting the close links between research, educational reform and practice.

The continuation of this discussion took place on 15 August, during the presentation “The Journal Cultural-Historical Psychology as a Space for Dialogue and the Development of the Vygotskian School”. The focus was placed on the analysis of the journal’s publication and citation record across its twenty years of existence. Key findings include: over 20 years, the journal has published 947 articles by authors from 49 countries, and nearly one thousand works cite articles from the journal, with more than one third of these citing papers appearing in first-quartile (Q1) journals. Cultural-Historical Psychology has thus firmly established itself as a platform for international dialogue and as an instrument for consolidating the position of the Vygotskian scholarly tradition in the global academic space.
