Exploring metacognition and executive functions in humans: insights from a special issue of Contemporary Foreign Psychology

We present the third issue of the journal «Contemporary Foreign Psychology» (No. 3-2025). Its thematic section is dedicated to the problem of metacognition across a wide range of contexts in contemporary science. The authors of thematic articles analyze the adaptive functioning of children with autism spectrum disorders; the peculiarities of executive functions in adolescents engrossed in video games; the role of emotional intelligence and metacognitive awareness in the emotional adaptation of international students in a foreign language environment; the current state of the theory of the metacognitive level of color cognition; the connection between the creativity of polyglots and the features of their cognitive regulation; the influence of the digital environment and adverse childhood experiences on children's executive functions; and descriptions of techniques for developing executive functions in mathematics education.

The conclusions of the article authors lead to the understanding that activated working memory, cognitive flexibility, and impulse control underlie successful learning, social interaction, and emotional regulation. The thematic editors of the issue are: Distinguished Professor of Psychology at the University of Houston, Elena Leonidovna Grigorenko (USA), and a teaching assistant, doctoral student in the Department of Psychology at McGill University Elena Yurevna Semenova (Canada).

The remaining articles in the issue are devoted to several problems relevant to contemporary psychology. These include age, cultural, and social aspects of human time perspective; the application of artificial intelligence in the practice of psychological assessment of drawing tests; prospects and limitations of the four-component model of school learning; value orientations as a factor in preventing emotional burnout and the neurocognitive characteristics of emotional burnout syndrome; the psychological, psychophysiological, and psychoendocrine foundations of decision-making; advanced methods of natural language processing (NLP) in the study of people's psychological well-being; and the role of cognitive factors in the study of mathematics by children with autism spectrum disorder.
