Communicative conditions of speech activation in children with mental retardation

Abstract

The goal of the research presented in this paper was to reveal the conditions in which speech activity in early school age children with mental retardation can be activated. To reach this goal, the author analysed the characteristics of statements made by 196 children aged from 10 to 12 years in different speech generating conditions. The results obtained in the experiment show that children with mental retardation have considerable potential speech abilities that can be activated when the motivational mechanisms are involved and that are connected with giving communicative significance to speech generation. Raising the level of communicative significance leads to certain changes in the semantics of statements and in the communicative behaviour, which can be used in organising speech work.
