Involuntary Memory Development: Replication of P.I. Zinchenko's Experiments

1483

Abstract

The paper presents results of a comparative historical study on involuntary memory and its features. The aim of the study was to reveal historical changes of involuntary memory. Among the subjects were pupils of Kharkov schools, pupils living in the countryside, and students. The method used in the study was the replication of classical experiments carried out by P.I. Zinchenko. The research findings proved that the correlation between involuntary recall rates and the role of memorised material in the structure of activity that was discovered by Zinchenko are still relevant. At the same time, certain qualitative and quantitative changes appeared in involuntary recall rates of modern subjects. Comparing the results of subjects living in different sociocultural conditions enabled the authors to reveal the following factors affecting the effectiveness of memorising: a high level of self-regulation in non-play situations, features of school education, and features of cultural space.
