The Person and the Time: Choosing Coping Behaviours

2165

Abstract

The article focuses upon the relation between one's time perspective and his/her choice of strategies of coping behaviour in situations of interpersonal conflict. As it is discussed in the article, the choice of coping strategy type — cognitive, emotional or behavioural — depends on the orientation of one's time perspective. The techniques used in this research included the one by P. Zimbardo on time orientation, and E. Heim's technique defining coping strategies. The study enrolled 317 persons, 167 female and 150 male subjects, with the average age of 33 years. The results obtained in the study show that persons with future orientation tend to choose cognitive and behavioural coping strategies in situations of interpersonal conflicts. At the same time, persons oriented towards the fatalistic present choose non adaptivebehavioural strategies, such as withdrawal and avoidance of conflict resolution, resulting in the lack of stable coping strategies.
