Analyzing the Functional Organization of Psychosemantic System of Purpusefulness in Families

Abstract

This paper presents outcomes of an empirical research of the functional organization of the psychosemantic system of purposefulness in families. Our hypothesis suggests that analyzing dynamic features of the psychosemantic system can help reveal the principles of its functional organization. A modified version of I.L. Solomin’s technique of semantic differential allowed us to obtain dendrograms of concepts in men and women who are married and have children. A comparative analysis of these dendrograms revealed the following principles of the functional organization of the psychosemantic system of purposefulness in families: the dynamics of dominating values which define the value- and meaning-based regulation of the system depending on the factors of age and sex; the functionality of the system which is manifested in the integral organization and interrelation of functioning stages; the chronological organization of the psychosemantic system represented by the temporal semantics of the functional structures; the contents of the process of family identity formation, from a parental family to one’s own. The outcomes of this study may be applied in theory as well as in practice of social psychological work with families.
