Quantitative interpretation of the psyche qualitative analysis in chronic disorders of consciousness
Abstract
Context and Relevance. Chronic disorders of consciousness (DoC) are a common consequence of massive brain damage. Diagnosing patients with this condition is a difficult task for clinical psychologists practicing modern neurorehabilitation. As, by its definition, consciousness is inaccessible to empirical research. Objective. To examine a method for qualitative description of mental functions in DoC using quantitative indicators. Methods and Materials. The article describes a method for analyzing and assessing the number of mental representations characterizing the afferent-efferent composition of the observed activity of patients with brain damage. This instrument was used to examine the mental functions of 45 individuals with DoC and 45 patients with other disorders that impede the establishment of productive contact. Results. Application of the described method to the studied sample revealed significant differences in the assessed indicators between patients with DoC and the comparison group. The number of mental representations of participants in a minimally conscious state (MCS) during their interactions with accompanying persons significantly exceeded the same estimate during contact with a medical psychologist. Conclusions. A qualitative analysis of the afferent-efferent composition of the observed activity of patients with DoC can be presented in quantitative form. The information obtained this way facilitates the personalized design of restorative procedures, focusing on potentially intact components of mental functions.
