Motivational Structure of Character Behavior (Perception of Fictional Character Behavior Motivation. A Study of Contemporary Teenagers' Responces to the Film "Chuchelo" by Rolan Bykov)

Abstract

This study is dedicated to researching particulars regarding reactions of current-day teenagers to the Rolan Bykov film «Chuchelo». The main focus is on the viewers’ understanding of the behavior of the film’s characters. Subjects were selected from 8 th and 10 th -graders in Moscow. After viewing the film, they completed a questionnaire, where they were tasked to assess, on a 6-point scale (0-5), on whether specific motives were responsible for each of 13 actions performed by two of the film’s characters. A factor analysis of the received empirical data allowed the exposure of the contradictory nature of the motivational structure of the main heroine, to find points of «motivational conflict» in her behavior, and also display the effect of gender role identification among the viewers in understanding the character’s behavior. In addition, the data gathered in the course of the experiment allowed the identification of a series of significant moments relating to the psychological problematic of conformist and nonconformist behavior.
