Modern Approach to Using Transcription in Foreign Language Learning
Abstract
In modern language education, there is a sustained interest in improving phonetic skills and developing pronunciation competence. One of the tools that ensures conscious perception of the sound structure of a language is phonetic transcription. At the same time, attitudes towards its use remain ambiguous: some researchers consider transcription to be an effective method of pronunciation correction, while others note cognitive and methodological difficulties. The purpose of this article is to analyse contemporary approaches to the use of transcription in foreign language teaching and to identify the advantages and limitations of this method. The methodological basis of the study was a review and comparative analysis of Russian- and English-language sources, including works by Durukan & Gokgoz-Kurt (2024), Sarwat (2023), Lipińska (2018), Maskara (2013), Mompean (2015) and others. The results of the analysis showed that the effectiveness of transcription is determined by the age of the learners, their level of language awareness, the readiness of the teacher and the nature of the technologies used. Modern approaches involve the integration of transcription into the digital educational environment and an emphasis on independent work by students with audio and video materials. The conclusions obtained allow us to consider transcription not as a formal element of the educational process, but as a means of forming auditory-articulatory competence and development of students' phonetic awareness.
