Abstract

Context and relevance. The relevance of this study stems from contemporary literary scholarship's interest in the development of visual art and the origins of the individual creative expression of the author's worldview, which developed within the genres of sentimental and pre-romantic literature. The figure of P.I. Shalikov allows us to determine how these tendencies were realized in the genres of "short" magazine prose. Objective. To reveal the ways of creating a visual image in P.I. Shalikov’s note “Tsaritsyno” in the context of the development of descriptive prose at the beginning of the 19th century. Methods and materials. The material for the study was the publications of P.I. Shalikov in the journal “Vestnik Evropy” (1804), as well as the works of contemporary writers used for comparison, primarily N.M. Karamzin. Results. The result of the research is the establishment of the genre-stylistic nature of the analyzed note, as well as the clarification of the problematic-thematic and aesthetic content that the genre of the walk received in the prose of the early 19th century. Conclusions. Given the Karamzinian context of such "journeys," Shalikov's article on Tsaritsyno appears to be a fusion of fundamentally different tendencies. The author strives to offer the reader as much useful information as possible about the estate's history, its main attractions, the opportunities for visiting, and the meaningful experiences it can provide — thus, Shalikov clearly has an educational goal in mind. However, in his eyes, this realization is only possible by preserving the "sensible" principles of narrative, a significant part of which includes not only the direct expression of the narrator's experiences but also the recreation of "pictures" of the park, a visual effect ultimately intended to evoke similar experiences in the reader, embodying the principle of "empathy" that was the foundation of sentimental literature's pathos. The various ways of implementing this visual principle constitute the artistic originality of the text.
