Manipulative Influence Specifics in a Group

Abstract

This article presents theoretical points that determine direction of scientific development of the theme 'Manipulative interaction in the process of group functioning'. Manipulation is described as a specific kind of influence that can be realized not only on the interpersonal and intergroup but also on the in-group level. Grounds for such view can be found in some provisions of general and social psychology and personality psychology that describe group interaction specifics based on influence using peculiarities of group activity, understanding the group goals by the members of the group and the activity aimed at realization of group tasks. The focus of presented research was to study peculiarities of Machiavellianism influence as an attitude realized by using manipulative tactics in interpersonal intercourse, satisfaction from being a member of the group and effectiveness of shared functioning for reaching the group goal. Analysis conducted in this article allows making the following conclusions: 1. The number presentation of machiavellianists is bigger in the middle strata of hierarchy structure of the group. 2. The value systems of people inclined / disposed to manipulative behavior are different from general value-orientation group unity in questions of group interaction. 3. The number of individuals inclined to manipulative behavior influences the comfort of group members and, therefore team spirit and level of group development. 4. The character of manipulative behavior of high-, medium- and low-status group members differs in objective and operational representation. Article also presents new theoretical provisions, based on the given conclusions, describing specifics of manipulative intercourse in the group.
