Abstract

Context and relevance. Aggressiveness is one of the predictors of active conflict behavior strategies and is therefore frequently linked to the overall difficulties faced by students. The theoretical foundation of the study is based on the cognitive-behavioral approach to aggression and A.L. Wenger’s theory of authoritarian self-affirmation syndrome, which consider family upbringing styles, classroom relationships, and broader social contexts. Objective. To identify the relationship between aggressiveness in early adolescent students and their conflict behavior strategies. Hypothesis. Adolescent aggressiveness is interrelated with active conflict behavior strategies (specifically, competition and cooperation) and with voluntary behavior regulation. Methods and materials. The sample consisted of 120 individuals, including 60 students of grades 5—6 from the School-Collegium named after Semyon Efremovich Ivanov, aged 11—12 years (23 girls and 37 boys), and 60 of their parents (43 mothers and 17 fathers). Research methods included the “Style of behavior in conflict” questionnaire by K. Thomas and R. Kilmann (adapted by N.V. Grishina); the “Measuring aggressive and hostile reactions” questionnaire by A. Buss and A. Durkee (adapted by A.A. Khvan, Yu.A. Zaitsev, and Yu.A. Kuznetsova); and the “Scale for studying voluntary regulation in adolescents” (T.O. Rippinen, E.R. Slobodskaya, N.B. Semenova, L.V. Lapteva, O.S. Kornienko, and N.A. Fedorova). Results. The findings indicated that overall indicators of activity regulation and voluntary behavior regulation in adolescents are not directly associated with their aggressiveness. Significant positive relationships were found between physical and indirect aggressiveness and the cooperation strategy, as well as between indirect aggressiveness and the competition strategy. Concurrently, the strategies of competition and compromise within the structure of behavioral factors are opposite to the strategies of avoidance and accommodation. Conclusions. Early adolescents with high levels of physical and indirect aggressiveness are more likely to use active conflict behavior strategies (cooperation and competition) and less frequently choose passive strategies (accommodation and avoidance).
