The relationship between aggressive behavior and perceptions of parental attitudes among adolescents

Context and relevance. The issue of parent-child relationships and the education system, as well as their influence on a child's behavior, still remains relevant in modern psychological and educational research. At the same time, the results of studies on the connection between children's views of their parents' behavior and the displays of aggression in adolescents often contradict each other. Objective. Determining the presence and quality of the connection between an adolescent's view of their parents' attitude and how they show aggression. Hypothesis. The manifestation of aggression in an adolescent's behavior is linked to the specific characteristics of their subjective perception of their parents' attitude toward them. Methods and materials. The study involved 104 students from a comprehensive school in Moscow (56 boys and 48 girls) aged 13-14 years. To assess the level of aggressive behavior, the following instruments were used: the "Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire (BPAQ-24)" (adapted by S.N. Enikolopov and N.P. Tsibulsky) and the "Aggressive Behavior" scale (E.P. Ilyin and P.A. Kovalev). Adolescents' perceptions of parental attitudes were assessed using the "Adolescents about Parents" test (L.I. Vasserman, I.A. Gorkovaya, and E.E. Romitsyna). Results The presence and quality of the connection between the adolescent’s perception of parental attitude and his manifestation of aggression was established. Conclusions. It has been shown that there is a significant inverse relationship between an adolescent’s perception of his parents’ positive attitude towards him and the characteristics of his aggressive behavior. At the same time, a direct link was found between forms of aggressive behavior in children and a hostile or detached attitude towards them on the part of both parents, as well as an inconsistent attitude on the part of the mother.
