Abstract

The paper describes a research on the correlation between the ethnic composition of one's significant social environment and his/her ethnic identity. The research was carried out in 2004—2006 in schools, colleges and universities in the Republic of Latvia. Young men and women aged 15 to 21 whose native language is Russian participated in the research. Both qualitative (interview) and quantitative (the Moreno Social Atom Test, content analysis, inventory, semantic differential) methods were used.According to the research findings, there is an indirect correlation between the ethnic composition of the significant social environment of an individual and his/her ethnic identity (both cognitive and affective components of the latter).
