Role of Musical and Cultural Context in Literary Education

Modern literary education is supposed to develop cultural competence in children. However, teachers do not always pay much attention to the worldview related and meaning making role of music in the works of a writer, although they do take into account the importance of associative, interpretative and thematic functions of musical art in the study of literature. In the author's opinion, music can provide a better understanding of the writer's ideas and help children to see how the writer's musical experiences became reflected in his/her works. The thin line between the aesthetic and the ethical can be sensed in almost all of Tolstoy's writings. This requires step-by-step systematic analysis of the figurative and psychological role of music in L.N. Tolstoy's works.
