Abstract

The paper describes a study on the effects of macro- and micro-social factors on the levels of physical appearance perfectionism and emotional well-being in young people. The outcomes of the study show that social setting of the individuals and features of their family communication have a significant impact on the level of physical appearance perfectionism and emotional well-being at this age. As it was revealed, physical appearance perfectionism is much stronger in young girls and boys living in big cities as compared to their peers living in small Russian towns. The level of emotional ill-being in the form of depression symptoms and anxiety is much higher in young boys from big cities as well. Families of young people with high levels of physical appearance perfectionism are generally more dysfunctional and heavily oriented towards criticism, external well-being and family perfectionism. It is clearly demonstrated that there also is a close connection between the level of physical appearance perfectionism and emotional ill-being in young girls.
