Dialogical Self And Psychotherapy

2452

Abstract

The wide diversity of psychotherapy methods sometimes brings the need to com- pare them and identify the relationships between them. The dialogical self theory proposed by Hubert Hermans as a bridging theory can be a useful tool for that — although it doesn’t offer fundamentally new ideas, it allows to connect various existing concepts. The article introduces a brief overview of the basic concepts of this theory and practical strategies and methods based on it. Human self is considered a dia- logue between different I-positions. The theory presents a long tradition of dialogue in philosophy and psychology on the one hand and the postmodern view on identity as multiple and changeable on the other. The possibilities and limitations of this model in psychotherapy are considered.
