Abstract

Background. Implementing an effective rehabilitation program requires consideration of not only the athlete’s physiological state but also their psychological well-being, which is strengthened through psychological rehabilitation and depends on a number of factors. An adequate perception of the injury determines the athlete’s overall well-being during rehabilitation and influences the recovery process. It is therefore important to understand exactly how the athlete perceives the sustained injury and the rehabilitation process. Objective: To examine the psychometric properties of the modified Russian-language version of the “Illness Perception Questionnaire” for studying athletes’ attitudes towards injury. Sample. The study involved 279 injured athletes aged 16 to 41 years (mean age 19.3 years, standard deviation 17.6). Results. It was shown that the questionnaire scales from the “Illness Perceptions” section demonstrated sufficient internal consistency reliability for the entire sample: “Timeline” — 0.783; “Timeline Cyclical” — 0.77; “Consequences” — 0.667; “Personal Control” — 0.638; “Treatment Control” — 0.695; “Illness Coherence” — 0.814; “Emotional Representations” — 0.797. Two scales from the “Causes of Injury” section showed acceptable internal consistency reliability, namely the “Emotional Causes” scale (0.712) and the “External Causes” scale (0.737). The “Personal Causes” scale (0.403) demonstrated internal consistency reliability that is unacceptable for research purposes. Conclusion. Thus, the modified “Illness Perception Questionnaire” has a sufficient level of internal consistency reliability in the “Illness Perceptions” section. This section can be used in studies investigating the impact of sports injuries on athletes. For the “Causes of Injury” section, low internal consistency reliability was found, indicating a need to revise the corresponding questions.
