Social identity of adolescents with deviant behavior: theoretical approaches and research directions

Context and relevance. A teenager’s social identity is formed in the context of age-related restructuring of the system of relationships, the expansion of their social world, and the search for their own foundations for self-determination. When studying the social identity of teenagers, it is particularly important to distinguish between its normative agerelated incompleteness and the characteristics revealed in deviant behavior. Objective: to analyze the main research directions concerning the social identity of adolescents with deviant behavior and to identify prospects for studying its regulatory significance in adolescent behavior. Results. The analysis indicates that the incompleteness and relative diffusion of identity characteristic of adolescence are not, in themselves, specific features of adolescents with deviant behavior. The analysis of social identity requires a distinction between objective group membership, the subjective significance of social identification, group referentiality, and the potential regulatory significance of the associated normative orientations. A comparison of structural-content and functional approaches shows that the presence of prosocial normative orientations in identity does not in itself indicate their involvement in the regulation of actual behavior. Conclusions. A promising direction for further research is to examine the psychological conditions under which social identity acquires regulatory significance in adolescents with deviant behavior. Such research requires relating the structural and content characteristics and subjective organization of social group memberships to referential relationships, normative orientations, and adolescents’ actual behavior.
