Understanding of intentional speech subtext by a listener

Abstract

The study of the phenomenon of understanding speech intentions and the development of methodological tools of intent-analysis requires an estimation of the measure of the inevitable subjectivity of perception of intentions of a subject depending on the conditions of communication, the listener's experience, his professional position, etc. In this research work we set the task to study experimentally in an environment close to nature the understanding of intentional implications of speech by persons who have no experience in the reconstruction of the speech intentions («naive» students), in comparison with data of the intent-analysis and expert assessment. In the material of television campaign speeches of politicians it is shown that untrained listeners are inclined to attribute to the speeches additional intentional characteristics and in comparison with experts to attribute greater severity to intentions. Experts underestimate the representation of intentions in a speech comparatively with the data of intent-analysis: the list of intentions is reduced and their severity is downplayed.
