Abstract

Context and relevance. The research was carried out in line with linguopragmatics and cognitive linguistics. The relevance of the work is due to the need to study the mechanisms of verbalization of complex psychological concepts through implicatures and the problems of their transmission in translation. Goal. To analyze how the implicatures verbalizing the concept of "contempt" in Moravia's novel are transformed in translation through explication strategies. Hypothesis. The concept of "contempt" is realized mainly through a system of implicatures, and its adequate transmission in translation requires a strategic explication of hidden meanings. Methods and materials. The methods include a pragmalinguistic analysis of implications and a comparative analysis of translation transformations. The material is the original novel and its translation by G. Bohemsky and R. Khlodovsky. Results. The key translation strategies are identified, namely partial explication of implicit meanings and preservation of the implication with compensation in other elements of the text. Conclusions. Explication of implicatures is a necessary but insufficient condition for an adequate translation of the concept of "contempt". The optimal strategy is considered to be a combination of punctual explication while maintaining the implicitness of key meanings.
