Abstract

At present, the theme of empathy is becoming increasingly interesting to the researchers. Research on this topic is now carried out in different areas and activities, primarily related to the relationship with people. Much attention is paid to such occupations as a psychologist, teacher, journalist, and so on. But on par with this study, research of the empathic abilities in penitentiary system staff employees is no less important, since their activities are directly related to communication with special contingent that has its own characteristics and can apply a certain effect on the personality of the staff. As this topic has become popular among researchers not so long ago, there is a number of difficulties associated with the heterogeneity of approaches to the study of this issue. In the literature there are works devoted not only to empirical studies, but also a large amount of theoretical reviews. Among the works that describe the features of the emotional sphere of penitentiary system employees, the most discussing issue is consideration of emotional activity, emotional intelligence, emotional burnout, empathy as a personality trait. The problem of the relationship of empathic abilities in persons being directly in contact with the prisoners, has not been properly described yet in the scientific literature and requires further study.
