Abstract

The article presents the development of an expert technique to identify police officers who are prone to distortion of official information during their professional activities. We used a questionnaire consisting of seven questions, three of which reflect the attitude of employees to distortion of information; three questions to the actions of the staff to ensure the accuracy of information and one integral question reflecting the value orientation and legal setting. We revealed the criteria for assessing the propensity to distort the information, confirmed by objective indicators of behavioral manifestations, as well as disciplinary practices. We also identified the areas of research to determine the professional psychological mechanisms of the phenomenon under study. The experts were 438 employees and 14 regional offices of the Internal Affairs. The estimated staff of these agencies and departments were 262 people. Based on the results of the statistical analysis of the survey, the sample of employees was divided into three groups with respect to the integral index, which determines the severity of the psychological quality of tendency to distort the service information. The three groups were: group with high level of the integral index (II ≥ 0,826); with the low level of the integral index (II ≤ 0,537), and the intermediate group, which included staff with the level of the integral index from 0,538 to 0,827. Further research was conducted with two contrast groups, which included: study of the characteristics of their official activity, psychological characteristics, state of disciplinary practices, psychodiagnostic examination of value-semantic sphere and others. In conclusion, we identify the areas for study of personality characteristics of law enforcement officers who are prone to distortion of proprietary information.
