С помощью рассылаемых по почте опросников были обследованы психотерапевты различных теоретических направлений с целью выявления личностных характеристик, теоретических направлений, личной философии и ценностей (то есть метафизических и эпистемологических принципов). Подсчитывался показатель диссонанса между метатеоретическим подходом, характерным для избранной терапевтом ориентации, и его личностными ценностями. Этот показатель сопоставлялся с различными переменными. Наиболее важным результатом является обратная корреляция между показателем диссонанса и уровнем удовлетворенности данной ориентацией, а также весом, придаваемым личной философии и ценностям при выборе теоретической ориентации. Сделаны вывооды о значении обнаруженных результатов для обучения и исследований.

Исследователи психотерапии проявляют все больший интерес к проблеме изучения личности терапевта, особенно с тех пор, как было признано, что личность терапевта оказывает ощутимое влияние и на процесс терапии, и на ее результат (Crits-Christoph et al., 1991; Lambert, 1989; Luborsky et al., 1986). Этот растущий интерес нашел свое проявление в создании в 1989г. в рамках Общества по исследованию психотерапии (SPR) сети совместных исследований (CRN), цель которой – изучение развития психотерапевтов на основе обширного международного проекта (Collaborative Research Network Steering Committee, в печати; Orlinsky et al., в печати).
