Psychological qualities of candidates for foster parents that determine their readiness for parenthood

Context and relevance. The psychological qualities of candidates for substitute parenting influence their readiness to accept a child into the family. Their personal maturity forms the foundation for the health and well‑being of the adopted child. Objective. To analyze the relationship between readiness for parenthood and the personal characteristics of candidates for substitute parenting. Methods and materials. The study involved 100 candidates for substitute parenting who had completed training at the “School of Foster Parents” at the Akmulla Bashkir State Pedagogical University. The following tools were used: a standardized interview (V.N. Oslon), the 16PF multifactor personality questionnaire (R.B. Cattell), a method for determining the dominant state (L.V. Kulikov), the hardiness questionnaire (S. Maddi), and the human resilience questionnaire (E.A. Rylskaya). Results. It was found that the higher the level of engagement, control, risk‑taking, resilience, and vitality among prospective foster parents, the higher their “satisfaction with the quality of life and their own parental competencies”. Conclusions. The identified relationships can serve as a basis for developing a psychogram for a candidate for substitute parenting.
