Individuality: The Unity of Incompatible

587

Abstract

The author puts forward a hypothesis concerning a dynamic approach to exploring individuality. He considers dynamic individuality a mystery (a closed, non-additive, incomplete formation) and chooses the metaphor 'individuality as limitedness' as a starting point for his analysis. The author also discusses the idea about the contradiction between the two possible ways of individuality development - centrifugal and centripetal - and the idea of a 'multi-seated' individuality as an attempt to overcome this contradiction. In the light of the dynamic approach individuality appears as a unique innovative and conservative formation providing the process of individualisation - that is, of initiating and maintaining one's continual self-transformation.
