Ethnonational Attitudes and Values of Present-Day Youth

8047

Abstract

The aim of this work was explore the correlation between S. Schwartz's motivational types of values and ethnonational attitudes. The research was conducted in 2009—2010 in five Russian regions: the Republic of Buryatia, Kamchatka, Volga region, the Republic of Tatarstan, and the Udmurt Republic. It involved 610 participants, all of them students of the universities located in the regional capitals. As it was revealed, the following values have the strongest impact on ethnonational attitudes: Power (seeking for social dominance), Universalism (seeking for common welfare), Tradition (respect for customs and symbols of group solidarity), and Hedonism (seeking for pleasures). Young persons with differences in ethnonational attitudes would have different value priorities. It is also showed that the choice between the significance/insignificance of «national» is closely related to the value conflict between seeking for dominance (Power) and seeking for common welfare (Universlism) and to how it is resolved. Moreover, on the level of personal values the significance of «national», that is determined by the Power value, would be reflected in the tendency for out-group discrimination.
