Abstract

Context and relevance. Values play a significant role in socialization processes and can serve as a psychological resource in difficult life situations under conditions of limited material well-being. Theoretical foundations of the study include the value models of Sh. Schwartz and R. Inglehart, as well as the concept of economic socialization.
Objective. To identify the features of students’ value orientations depending on their subjective assessment of a family’s material status.
Hypothesis. The subjective perception of material disadvantage is associated with the predominance of certain value orientations that function as psychological resources facilitating adaptation to difficult life situations.
Methods and materials. The study involved 2315 students from 10 cities of Russia (M = 20,19; SD = 2,9; 83% female). The Schwartz Value Survey (PVQ-R2) and subjective self-assessment of the family’s material status were used. Statistical data analysis was carried out using ANOVA, Waller–Duncan and Games–Howell tests.
Results. A significant relationship was found between the family’s financial status and the preference for several values: Tradition, Benevolence — Caring, Hedonism, Achievement, Security — Societal, Conformity — Interpersonal, Power — Resources, Self-Direction — Thought, Security — Personal, and Benevolence — Dependability. The most prominent values among youth from well-off families were Tradition, Hedonism, Achievement, and Benevolence, whereas young people from low-income families more often demonstrated the value of Conformity — Interpersonal.
Conclusions. The value structure of youth at the stage of secondary economic socialization is associated with subjective assessment of the family’s material status. According to the results, the value of Conformity — Interpersonal may serve as a psychological resource contributing to adaptation in difficult life situations. The findings suggest that Russian social context modifies the general patterns proposed by Schwartz’s and Inglehart’s theories, which calls for further interdisciplinary research considering the sociocultural specificity of society.
