Occurrence of Action (Notes on the Development of Object-Oriented Actions II)

Abstract

The paper critically rethinks and recreates the concept of an object-oriented action. Drawing on the works of Daniil Elkonin the author introduces a concept of an Occurrence of action. The Occurrence of action rep- resents the transition to a new form of activity. This new form of activity is an action mediated by a pattern given to a child by an adult. The Occurrence of action takes place as the child engages in the process of chal- lenging the adult by testing and approving these patterns. In the Occurrence of action the action itself appears as a phenomenon, while the actors appear as the ones who find their place in the situation. Three transitions are created and interlocked through the Occurrence of action: a transition to a new situation of activity, a tran- sition to the individual's sense of their own activity, and a transition to sign-mediated behavior. The Occurrence of action is by all means the key point in the everyday lives of children and adults. Basing on the observations, the author gives a theoretical overview of the Occurrence of action in early childhood.
