Investigation of the Categorical Structure of Perception of Musical Fragments, Transformed with the Help of Contemporary Acoustic Technologies

Abstract

This article presents experimental data which demonstrates that along with the tempo-rhythmic, harmonic and melodic structure of a musical composition, the means of recording, , the technical conditions for the transfer of sound, has as strong an influence. Data obtained from the results of semantic scaling of musical fragments, characterized by different recording formats, testify differences in the categorical structure of their perception. At the same time, as a result of wide dissemination of recordings of musical works in the format МP3 and preferential listening to music, transmitted through the electro-acoustic channels and via the Internet rather than in natural conditions, it appears that preference is given to that recording format, despite the evidence of its low quality. The question arises about the negative impact on the perception of such a change in the acoustic environment, in particular, about changes in the auditory standards, developed in humans during evolution. It is also feared that an increase of the popularity of synthetic music, which on the one hand, opens up new possibilities of perception of sound material by humans, but on the other - from the perspective of psychology of perception, has been poorly studied.
