Configurational signs of neutral facial expressions

1157

Abstract

The present work is devoted to the study of perception of emotionally neutral faces, in the course of which we also identify configurational signs of faces that give the impression of their emotionality. The results partially support the conclusions of classical studies by E. Brunswick, conducted on the basis of the examination of the perception of expressions of schematic faces deprived of direct signs of emotions. In addition, one of the interesting aspects of the analysis discussed in this study is the question of combinations of configurational signs, which generate the impressions of main emotions («happiness» vs. «sadness») and additional emotions on the images of a real face. It is shown that the dependence of the intensity of induced emotions from the configurational signs has a nonlinear character. According to the gathered data, the perception of induced expressions appears as a systemic effect, also depending on the morphotype of the model’s face.
