Motivation of sleep, and adaptation to the conditions of the laboratory: the impact on an objective picture and subjective evaluation of a daytime sleep

838

Abstract

The paper is devoted to the influence of intention to sleep and adaptation to the lab on nap’s structure in good sleepers. 1-hour nap was registered in 33 good sleepers randomly assigned to the lab’s first visit / revisit conditions. Intention to sleep, subjective sleep quality, anxiety, depression and sleepiness were appraised. High intention to sleep was associated with longer sleep latency and sleep fragmentation. The influence of intention on sleep latency was especially high in lab’s revisit condition. Effects didn’t depend on anxiety, depression and sleepiness. In general, data supports psychological model of sleep regulation (Tkhostov, Rasskazova) expanding traditional cognitive model of sleep and insomnia and confirming common mechanisms of sleep regulation in norm and pathology.
