Speech implications in the description and expression of human mental states

Abstract

This article investigates how the speakers' communicative intentions are interpreted based on descriptive and expressive reference to human mental states in works by modern Russian writers. Using the research tools of pragmatics (for instance, the notion of implicature), the authors reveal the relevance of prototypical knowledge, on the one hand, and of inferential knowledge, on the other. It is shown that both types of knowledge are responsible for new meanings emerging as a result of descriptive and expressive reference to human mental states
